ARTIST SPOTLIGHT – Alexx Simone -INTERVIEW

We’re kicking off 2023 with a brand new instalment of our Artist Spotlight series, featuring Alexx Simone, a superb songwriter and musician hailing from El Paso, Texas. In yet another successful collaboration via SoundBetter Sefi has been busy working with Alexx to produce, mix and master all new music for the year ahead.

Hi Alexx, please tell us a little about yourself

I grew up in El Paso, Texas. I have always enjoyed making stuff and expressing myself in a sort of eccentric way because I loved the way it amused and engaged people. When I began singing, I discovered another element to that free-spirited expression.

How long have you been creating music and where did your story begin?

I began singing at a very young age. My parents fostered my love for music through church. I really enjoyed the ethereal and soulful qualities of gospel tunes. I participated in a few singing groups growing up but eventually found myself writing my own stuff the summer after high school.

Why do you write music and what inspires your creative process?

I write because I can paint the stories that I otherwise couldn’t personify. I do this both through writing music and through filmmaking. To be able to create a feeling that connects you to a moment in your life is an amazing experience. My creative process is inspired by the amazing artists that came before me and the ones I admire today. I am continually inspired by my passion for impactful storytelling and world creation.

Who/what are some of your key influences in music that have helped shape your sound?

Lauryn Hill continues to be an all-time inspiration for me. I feel so connected to her acoustic sensibilities and her raw and vibrant voice. Michael Kiwanuka is a songwriter that stimulated me a lot in my songwriting journey, as well as film composers like Michael Abels, who are able to create such powerful musical scores for films.

What is your personal favourite project you’ve worked on and why?

I think my favourite project right is a track off my upcoming album called Do You See Me. It is one of the first tracks I’d been able to experiment with song structure and dynamics in a way I haven’t before.

What can we expect to hear from you in the future?

My next big project will be my debut album. This is a project I am pouring a lot of myself into, and I am really excited about what it’s been able to teach me about song writing at large.
